Syllable Integrity

چکیده
This paper argues that syllables may be divided by feet, based on an analysis of Banawá, an Arawan language of the Brazilian Amazon. This result is important for phonological theory because it improves our understanding of the variable roles of syllables and moras in the phonological systems of individual languages and because it underscores the urgent need for more fieldwork on the prosody of the world’s languages. Available data on the prosodic systems of the world’s nearly 7000 languages lags so far behind the data available on other aspects of grammar that it seems premature to base predictions concerning prosodies on poorly informed notions of rarity or markedness in prosodic structures.

Issues in Banawá Prosody: Onset Sensitivity, Minimal Words, and Syllable Integrity
Three aspects of Banawá prosody (Buller, Buller, and Everett 1993, Everett 1996a,b) have been argued to present significant difficulties for metrical stress theory. First, Banawá stress is sensitive to the presence or absence of syllable onsets; second, Banawá tolerates monomoraic feet yet requires a bimoraic minimal word; and, third, it seems to employ mora-based footing that is free to ignore...
متن کاملWhite Matter Integrity and Treatment-Based Change in Speech Performance in Minimally Verbal Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
We investigated the relationship between imaging variables for two language/speech-motor tracts and speech fluency variables in 10 minimally verbal (MV) children with autism. Specifically, we tested whether measures of white matter integrity-fractional anisotropy (FA) of the arcuate fasciculus (AF) and frontal aslant tract (FAT)-were related to change in percent syllable-initial consonants corr...
متن کاملIs Syllable Stress Information Robust for ASR in Adverse Conditions?
This paper presents a study on the robustness of stress information for automatic speech recognition in the presence of noise. The syllable stress, extracted from the speech signal, was integrated in the recognition process by means of a previously proposed decoding method. Experiments were conducted for several signal-to-noise ratio conditions and the results show that stress information is ro...
متن کاملEdge-Integrity and the Syllable Structure in Korean
The so-called overapplication of Coda Neutralization in Korean, the occurrence of a neutralized consonant in a non-neutralizing environment, is often considered as evidence for serial derivation. In this paper I propose that the neutralization effect at surface is not a result of a phonological process at an intermediate level in serial derivation, but due to a constraint requiring the integrit...
متن کاملDevelopment of syllable structure in Azeri-speaking children
Introduction: the length and complexity of syllable structure in the utterances of the children increases with age.Given the important and determining role of syllable in the speech process, performance of developmental studies on syllable acquisition in children are essential. The aim of the present study was to investigate the development and acquisition of syllable structure and the distribu...
متن کاملSyllable structure in Old, Middle and Modern Persian: A contrastive analysis
Evolution of languages has always been of interest to linguists. In this paper we study the natural progress of the syllable structure from Old Persian (O.P) to Middle Persian (Mi.P) and up to the Modern Persian (Mo.P). For this purpose all the words containing consonant sequences are collected from specific sources of each of these languages, and then analysed according to the syllab...
